Many young people are passionate about conserving the environment and want to see a more sustainable use of the world's resources.   If you have students who are keen to make an impact in this area they may be interested in undertaking our Natural Resource Management major.

Natural Resource Management (NRM) students learn to apply scientific, economic and social knowledge to complex real-world problems. They explore challenging issues such as how to balance economic well-being with the pressing need to protect our biodiversity.

Skills and knowledge are developed through a combination of teaching methods such as lectures from leading experts, practical classes, computer labs and tutorials. Students also acquire practical experience through field work and field trips of two to three days.

Our graduates are the influential conservation officers, environmental consultants, resource economists and agricultural consultants of the future.  They are in demand from a wide variety of organisations within both the public and private sector.

Brendan Farrelly, Environmental Advisor for Chevron Australia commented "My NRM studies provided me with the necessary skills to approach a problem, develop a practical way to understand it, and work towards finding a solution".

This major covers a wide variety of topics, including:

  • Earth systems
  • Environmental economics
  • Hydrology
  • Environmental policy and planning
  • Geographic information systems
  • Business and the environment
  • Project and risk management
  • Regional development and planning
  • Decision tools for natural resource management

Natural Resource Management is available as a degree-specific major under the Bachelor of Science, or a second major as part of an Arts, Commerce, Design or Science degree. To enhance their degree and career prospects, students may choose to combine Natural Resource Management with other majors such as Agricultural Science , Economics , Geography , Human Geography and Planning , Law and Society , Management , Marine Science or Zoology .
