What does the study ‘mode’ mean for my units?

UWA is currently offering units in a variety of modes which students can choose when enrolling via studentConnect. The definitions below will assist with your study mode selection:
Teaching Modes - 2026 onwards
| Mode | Code | Explanation |
| On-campus | OC | Teaching activities will occur on campus. International students: counts as on campus. |
| On-campus Flexible | CF | Some learning and teaching will typically occur both on campus and/or online, but there will be a requirement to physically attend campus at a certain point(s) during the teaching period. International students: must normally enrol in Face to Face classes. |
| Flexible | FL | Some learning and teaching will typically occur both on campus and/or online, but there will be no requirement to physically attend campus at any point during the teaching period. International students: counts as online. |
| Online Only | OO | All learning and teaching will occur online, no requirement to visit physical campus. International students: counts as online. |
| Professional Placement | PP | Internships / Placements / Study trips. |
Teaching Modes - Pre-2026

| External | EXTERNAL | Unit delivered externally. |
| Face to Face | FACE2FACE | On campus attendance for some activities is required to complete this unit. Unit may include a mix of online and on-campus study and assessment requirements. International students: counts as on campus. |
| Multi-mode | MULTIMODE | Unit delivered using a set combination of different delivery modes. |
| Off Campus Classes | OFF-CAMPUS | Unit delivered off-campus. |
| Online Timetabled | ONLINE-TT | 100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. International students: counts as online. |
| Online Flexible | FL-ONLINE | 100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit does not have timetabled activities apart from assessment deadlines or exams. International students: counts as online. |
| Online Timetabled Restricted | ONLINE-RE | 100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade. This mode is only available to students to approved students. International students: counts as online. |

If you are an international student visa holder, you can normally only study up to one-third of your total course through online/flexible units. You must also be enrolled in at least one on-campus unit each semester. If you have a query about your study plan and unit modes, contact your Student Advising Office.
