10% discount for NZ SCV holders on up front payments
Will the HECS 10% up front payment discount apply to eligible New Zealand citizen SCV holders?
There have been several iterations of discounts introduced or abolished by various governments. There is currently no discount for upfront payments for any students.
A previous HECS-HELP discount was removed on 1 January 2017, and reinstated on up front payments of $500 or more from 1 January 2021. That 10% discount has now ended with effect from 31 December 2022.
Previous discounts:
The 10% discount for up-front payments of $500 or more for units of study with a census date on or after 1 January 2021 applied if a student was entitled to an amount of HECS-HELP assistance for a unit of study with a higher education provider. This meant that if a New Zealand Special Category Visa (SCV) holder was eligible for a HELP loan then they were also eligible for the HECS-HELP 10% discount.
This discount was abolished by the former government from 1 January 2017 and reintroduced from 1 January 2021.
