If you are an international student visa holder, you can apply for Approved Leave from your studies for a semester or a whole year on compassionate and compelling grounds.

Compassionate and compelling circumstances are generally those beyond your control and have an impact on your course progress or wellbeing, for example, serious injury or illness with a medical certificate stating the student cannot attend classes, or compelling personal circumstances, such as the death of a close family member, that might require the student to return home for an agreed period of time.

International student visa holders are required to provide supporting documents covering the entire requested period of absence within 14 calendar days of submitting an Approved Leave application to the International Student Support Team via Email Us - askUWA.

We assess your eligibility for Approved Leave based on your circumstances and the supporting documents you provide.
Examples of appropriate supporting documents include:
  • A detailed medical statement from a medical specialist outlining how the circumstances have impacted your studies.
  • A detailed statement from a counsellor or psychologist outlining how the circumstances have impacted your studies.
  • A police statement.
  • A copy of a death certificate or death notice of a close family member.
All documentation must be provided in English. Overseas medical certificates issued in a language other than English must be translated into English by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) or an overseas notary department.

Note: Self-translated documents are not acceptable.
