What are Defence Trade Controls?

Researchers who collaborate internationally must comply with Defence Trade Controls. Australia's Defence Trade Controls Act 2012 and Defence and Strategic Goods List (DSGL) regulate the export and supply of certain goods and technologies. This includes the physical or digital transfer of items or knowledge that could be usable for military purposes, even if the research is for peaceful purposes. If your research involves items listed on the DSGL, you may need a permit to collaborate outside Australia, or with foreign nationals in Australia.
