When and how do I apply for a research internship?

When to Apply:
Plan your future research internship with a REU partner organisation in your first year of doctoral study.
The actual research internship can be completed any time during candidature and before your final certification of thesis.
Checks to consider before applying:
- Refer to types of research and development engagement equating to a research internship and examples of R&D activities.
- The timing of your internship on your completion plan, schedule & milestones met.
- Refer to the impact of conditions to your scholarship and any visa requirements.
- Check with your co-ordinating supervisor regarding IP, and if you require ethics approval. Once you receive Graduate Research School (GRS) approval, you can commence the internship.

How to Apply:
Bespoke research internship:
Details still to be worked out? Use the Letter of Intent when details are yet to be worked out or when the 18-month window (36 months part time) is nearing.
Details are fully worked out? Use the PhD Internship Agreement. Refer to templates & obtain signatures from you, your supervisor and host.
Advertised research internship:
Save the advert & your application as a pdf.
Wait until you are selected & receive an offer of internship. Save your documents.
R&D Placements:
R&D projects with an industry partner (such as arranged via a CRC or ITTC), or short term R&D related project related to employment, you'll need to obtain details of the arrangement in writing, agreed by you, and endorsed by your host organisation. Save your documents
Where to Submit your documents:
Upload your internship agreement or any written agreement for GRS approval via HDR Internship Application MS Form
What happens next:
Your supervisor will then be contacted, on GRS approval, a fully signed agreement will be emailed to you for your records.
