Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students may apply for one or more periods of voluntary suspension, also referred to as approved leave, in compassionate or compelling circumstances.

You may apply for up to 12 months in total, except in recognition of exceptional circumstances outside your student, and irrespective of full-time or part-time enrolment.

Periods of suspension will normally be approved only for full teaching periods. That is a student may not start or end a period of suspension partway through a teaching period other than in exceptional circumstances outside the student's control. Refer to the teaching periods for the Graduate Research School for your teaching period dates.

Periods of suspension are not approved whilst you are on extension of candidature, and under no circumstances will a suspension be approved for a period of less than one month.

Your application for suspension can be submitted in HDRhub.
  1. Login to HDRhub using your student ID.
  2. Go to 'My project', 'Candidature management', and 'Start a new application'.
  3. Provide reasons for your request and upload any relevant supporting documents.
Your request will need to be endorsed by your Coordinating Supervisor and Graduate Research Coordinator (GRC).

If you are a student visa holder, you should seek advice from Home Affairs on the potential impact on your visa.

If you re a scholarship holder, check the conditions of your scholarship before before applying for suspension or long term leave.
