Will I be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported place while I am off overseas and cannot return to Australia due to travel restrictions?

To be eligible for a CSP, you must be one of the following:
  • be an Australian citizen, who will complete some of your course of study while resident in Australia; or
  • a New Zealand citizen; or an Australian permanent visa holder; or an eligible former permanent humanitarian visa holder; who studies the entire course while living in Australia
If you are not offered a CSP, you will be enrolled in a full fee-paying place where the government does not pay the subsidy and you pay the full amount for your fees.

Temporary changes due to COVID-19 - no longer applicable 1 January 2023:
Due to previous travel restrictions to Australia related to COVID-19, the government approved some temporary amendments to the eligibility criteria during that time. These amendments are no longer in place, as travel restrictions have been lifted. The amendments were:

Australian citizens:
  • You will meet the CSP residency requirements if UWA reasonably expects that you will undertake at least some of your course of study in Australia.
  • You will not meet the CSP residency requirements if UWA reasonably expects that they will not undertake any of your course in Australia. For example, if you intend on studying overseas via distance education for your entire course, then you would not meet the CSP residency requirements and will be enrolled in a full fee-paying place.
Permanent visa holder (including permanent humanitarian visa holders) or a New Zealand citizen:
  • You must be resident in Australia for the duration of your unit(s) to meet the CSP residency requirements. However, any period of residence outside Australia will be disregarded if:
    • it cannot reasonably be regarded as indicating an intention to reside outside Australia for the duration of the unit, or
    • it is required for the purpose of completing a requirement of that unit.
