Do all Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students engaged in research & development (R&D) activity with an external organisation need to report this?

All Research and Development (R&D) activities undertaken by a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) student with an external organisation need to be reported to the Graduate Research School (GRS).

Research internships and other forms of R&D activity with an external organisation must be documented in a written agreement signed by the parties (HDR student, partner organisation and UWA) and reported to the Department of Education via the GRS. When certain conditions are met, this can also yield increased funding return to the university and your School to support more HDR scholarships in the future. It does not impact on completion of your studies.

Refer to the types of R&D activities and types of R&D industry engagement pathways. If you're unsure, discuss this with your Co-ordinating Supervisor.

If your R&D engagement is integrated with your HDR studies, linked to employment or as a volunteer, you'll need to submit a report including the following details:
  • Your written agreement dated & signed
  • Start & finish dates
  • An indication of the duration in total number of days
  • Any additional supporting evidence & upload to the HDRhub REUE or email internships-grs@uwa.edu.au to confim requirements
If you have completed an approved R&D project as a research internship, you need to provide a written report of your R&D activities with your host organisation via HDRhub.

1. Login to HDRhub.
2. Under Development, click Research end user engagement tab
3. Click Report and close REUE tab and complete the fields, upload your documents (reflection & summary report, evidence of R&D activity time), and save.
