Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students can apply for travel funding of up to $1850 during their studies from the Graduate Research School (GRS). The award facilitates international and interstate travel for research purposes including fieldwork, conferences, or travel to gather research data.

The awards are available to full-time and part-time HDR students with a standard course duration of at least two years, full-time equivalent. You can apply more than once for travel funds, however the total maximum funding available for each student is $1850.

Your research proposal must be approved by the relevant board prior to approval of the travel award.

Award amounts
  • For travel within Australia, a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $750 can be awarded per application.
  • For overseas travel, a maximum of $1850 can be awarded per application.
  • For externally enrolled students, for travel within the country in which they are recorded as studying, a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $750 can be awarded per application.
Applications for the GRS Travel Award are submitted in HDRhub.
  1. Login to HDRhub using your student ID.
  2. Go to 'My project', 'Scholarships', and 'Create new application'.
If travelling overseas, you must first apply for an 'Absence without suspension' for overseas travel via HDRhub.

Your request will need to be endorsed by your Coordinating Supervisor. Once approved in HDRhub, you may start booking your travel via the Travel Management System (Concur) in accordance with the Travel Policy.

Only in exceptional cases, and only for long distance travel, can the award be used for travel within Western Australia.

Awards are normally granted only for travel within your candidature time, or up to six months after submission of your thesis in recognition of exceptional circumstances outside your control.

You must comply with the University's Travel Insurance Policy and take additional insurance where any period of leave is not related to your degree program.

Do not apply for an award for travel already undertaken. Awards are not offered retrospectively.
