Use of DeepSeek at UWA

Can DeepSeek be used at UWA?

The University of Western Australia (UWA) has blocked access to DeepSeek services on all UWA-managed devices and networks. This decision follows directives from the Western Australian Government and the Department of Home Affairs, due to concerns about the safety and security of data shared with DeepSeek's online services.

What this means for you:
  • DeepSeek is not accessible when using UWA networks or university-managed devices.
  • UWA strongly advises against using DeepSeek on personal devices for any University-related activities, including study, research, or communication involving University data.
What is still permitted:
  • You may use offline versions of DeepSeek models, where the tool runs entirely on your device and does not send any data to external servers.
  • These offline models are considered lower risk and are allowed on UWA infrastructure. However, this may change if government guidance is updated.
Important note
Different schools, courses, or research areas at UWA may have their own policies on using generative AI tools. Always check with your unit coordinator or supervisor for guidance specific to your course or research.
For further information on the appropriate use of generative AI tools in study and research, please refer to the guidance provided by the UWA Library.
