There are two main ways to study overseas during your degree: Exchange and Study Abroad (Visiting/Fee-Paying).
Exchange Programs
Exchange programs are available at universities where UWA has an established Exchange Agreement. You can view our current exchange partner universities via Semester Exchange Programs.
Through an exchange program, you can study at a partner university for one or two semesters. The tuition fee arrangements differ depending on your student status:
- Domestic students: You will continue to pay your tuition fees in the same way you are currently, whether it be through HECS or up front.
- International students: You continue paying your tuition fees to UWA as usual, rather than paying the host university.
One of the key benefits of an exchange program is that UWA supports you throughout the application process. You first submit an application through the Global Studio portal, and if you are successful, we will officially nominate you to your chosen host university. Once nominated, you will then complete the host university's application, which is typically a straightforward process.
Note: every partner university has its own eligibility criteria and academic requirements, such as minimum WAM, completed credit points, and any course-specific restrictions. Be sure to check the relevant university's profile in Global Studio for detailed eligibility information. You can also check the Course-Specific requirements.
Study Abroad (Visiting/Fee-Paying) Programs
Study Abroad programs (sometimes called Visiting, Fee-Paying or Independent programs) are available at universities where UWA does not have an established Exchange Agreement.
If you choose to study abroad under this option, you will apply as a visiting student directly with the host university. Study Abroad students are allowed to undertake both semester long (1-2 semesters) and short term programs. Unlike exchange, UWA is not involved in the application process and cannot nominate or apply on your behalf.
Regardless of whether you are a domestic or international student at UWA, you will be responsible for paying tuition fees directly to the host university. These fees may be paid personally or through an external funding source, such as the New Colombo Plan Scholarship, if applicable. Students are welcome to study at Exchange Partner universities as a Study Abroad student, however you will be required to pay the tuition fees up front to the host university.
Note: not all universities offer Study Abroad programs. You will also need to research the host university's eligibility requirements, academic restrictions, application process, and deadlines. Study Abroad students are required to register their program through Global Studio’s Registration for Study Abroad to ensure they can receive credit for their study abroad.
Funding
Both Exchange and Study Abroad programs may be eligible for the OS-HELP Loan, provided you meet the other eligibility requirements. Both Study Abroad and Exchange students are Global Learning Grants, however there are certain restrictions. Please check the Global Learning Grants information page to learn more.
