Impact on NZ SCV status when gaining Permanent Residency

Would an eligible New Zealand Citizen SCV holder lose their eligibility if they become a Australian Permanent Resident?
The Australian Government Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that New Zealand citizens who are Special Category visa (SCV) holders and gain Permanent Residency (PR) would lose their SCV status. This will affect a very small number of people.

Note: as a holder of a PR visa, you are generally on a pathway to Australian Citizenship. As soon as you gain Australian Citizenship, you are eligible to access the HELP loan schemes.
