Your CHESSN explained

What is a CHESSN?

A Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN) is a unique identifier provided by the Commonwealth government. Not all students are provided with a CHESSN. A CHESSN is only allocated when a student applies for a Commonwealth supported place, HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, SA-HELP and OS-HELP loan.

Your CHESSN is used by the Australian Government to follow your use of your Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) [Prior to abolishment in January 2012] and any accumulated Government student loan debt you may have. The CHESSN appears on your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) which can be found on studentConnect.

You can use your CHESSN to view your loan debts on the Study Assist website.
